VGP – The police force uncovered 23,000 drug-related cases and arrested 36,000 drug traffickers in 2019.

As many as 1.2 tons of heroin, 6.2 tons of methamphetamine, 1,053,099 synthetic drug pills, 614.05 kg of opium and 768 kg of cabanas were seized for the whole year.

Drug has been illegally transported into Viet Nam, mainly heroin and methamphetamine. Heroin and meths has been transported from the Triangle Area through Laos into Viet Nam, part of which has been consumed in Viet Nam and the rest will be delivered to other nations.

Recently, China’s functional agencies have focused on seizing meth production plants. Thus, drug traffickers have moved meth production plants to Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Viet Nam. Methamphetamine brought into Viet Nam through Viet Nam-China border lines has reduced and tended to increase at Viet Nam-Laos and Viet Nam-Cambodia border lines.

Drug traffickers have taken advantages of Viet Nam’s open policies for exports and imports to traffick drug from Laos into Viet Nam. Some drugs traffickers from Chinese Taipei joined hands with Vietnamese partners to set up companies for producing, exporting, importing and hiring stores in big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong Province and Dong Nai Province to camouflage drug dealing as legitimate businesses.

Drug is hidden and camouflaged in such products as electronics, farm products, plastic and toys before putting in containers for consumption in Chinese Taipei, China, the Philippines and Australia. A total number of 35 cases related to domestic drug production have been detected in the year.

Earlier this month, the Government Office has issued Document No. 10390/VPCP-QHQT sending to the Ministries of Public Security, Finance, Planning and Investment and Health to convey the directions of Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh on improving the effectiveness of the fight against trans-national drug crimes.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Public Security is tasked to join hands with the Ministries of Industry and Trade and Finance to review, inspect and closely control exports and imports of addictive substances into Viet Nam, monitor import license of enterprises and coordinate with relevant agencies to consider measures to control caffeine and other substances which may be used to produce synthetic drug.

The Ministry of Health is assigned to supervise the operation of retail pharmacies.
