VGP – The management board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria joined hands with Yen Bai Province’s Department of Health to organize a meeting on launching Buprenorphine treatment in 2019 in the northern province of Yen Bai.

The realization of Buprenorphine will facilitate drug addicts in the province to select suitable rehabilitation treatment for them.

As many as 2,666 drug addicts in Yen Bai Province have management profile, of whom 360 ones are treated at rehabilitation centers, 105 ones imprisoned and 2,201 ones at community.

The province has eight Methadone treatment centers treating for 1,033 patients.

Buprenorphine (BUP) is used recreationally instead of opium, morphine or heroin in many countries. BUP will help drug addicts to reduce their cravings. In addition, BUP also helps to relieve withdrawal symptoms like muscle and joint paint, sweating, anxiety or restlessness, yawning, runny noses. BUP also helps to prevent transmitted diseases through blood transfusions, such as Hepatitis B and C, due to its effect to reduce addicts' dependence on heroine.

Based on Decision No. 5595/QĐ-BYT of the Ministry of Health on approving the plan on Buprenorphine treatment in 2018-2020 period, the treatment will be launched at seven provinces of Son La, Dien Bien, Nghe An, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and Lai Chau.

The management board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS will launch free Buprenorphin distribution at two districts of Van Yen and Mu Cang Chai for nearly 60 patients. Buprenorphine will be treated at basic health centers since August this year.

The effect of BUP lasts between 2-3 days, while drug addicts would need to receive methadone every day. That means BUP treatment could help save patients a lot of time going to healthcare centers to collect the drug.

According to scientific reports, BUP has fewer side effects than methadone. However, patients still have to stay in healthcare centers for at least 10-15 minutes after taking the drug, while methadone patients can leave immediately.
