Two new HIV treatment laboratories open in Long An

VGP – The southern province of Long An has opened two new HIV treatment laboratories and built and provided technical sponsor for five HIV testing centers in 2019. 

The VAAX-US.CDC is a joint project between the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Viet Nam Administration for AIDS Control - VAAC, the Ministry of Health Viet Nam within the framework of the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The project aims to reduce HIV transmission through effective prevention measures, improve HIV/AIDS care, support and treatment as well as enhance the capacity and infrastructure of AIDS prevention and control system. 

As many as 262 new HIV carriers have been recorded since early 2019 in the province while 216 new HIV carriers have been rehabilitated, reaching 64.7% of the criteria. 

A total number of 1,905 HIV patients maintained their treatment, reaching 97%. 1,237 patients received HIV testing. From October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019, the number of new HIV carriers joining ARV treatment was 394 ones, reaching 165.5% of the criteria. 

According to the province’s disease control center, the province uncovered 300 new HIV carriers and 16 deaths of HIV/AIDS in 2018. Since August 1993, a total number of 5,100 HIV carriers have been recorded, including 1,400 deaths. 

Regarding Mother-to-child HIV transmission, a total number of 4,266 pregnant women have been tested with HIV since early 2019, detecting 11 positive for HIV, 10 of whom have received treatment.
