VGP – As of the end of 2019, more than 48,000 patients will receive ARV treatment with health insurance.

The number of new HIV carriers tends to decrease but the proportion of HIV transmissions among high risk groups, particularly drug addicts and men who have sex with men (MSM) has increased, said Director for Viet Nam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) Nguyen Hoang Long.

Earlier, 80-90% of ARV medicine for HIV carriers in Viet Nam are sponsored from foreign aid, however, foreign sponsor for ARV medicine will be reduced and end since 2020.

Thus, Decision No.2188/QĐ-TTg (Decision 2188) of the Prime Minister on payment of ARV medicines and support for users of ARVs from the Health Insurance Fund was issued. Accordingly, since January 1, 2019, all HIV-infected people aging from 16 have been paid for ARV treatment through health insurance.

In the first half of 2019, nearly 40,000 patients received ARV medicine with health insurance.

Currently, more than 115,000 HIV carriers have been treated with ARV nationwide. The Government has directed localities to ensure 100% of HIV carriers having health insurance cards.

Up to 90% of HIV/AIDS treatment laboratories have launched HIV treatment program through  health insurance treatment and around 85% of treatment centers have successfully paid at least one service from health insurance card.

2019 is the first year the program was launched, and it will be operated at 188 centers.
