ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime held

VGP - The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime is taking place from September 9-13 in Ha Noi, under the direction of Minister of Public Security To Lam. 

The event aims to respond to new and unexpected happenings of drug situations in the region, create an opportunity to exchange information about drug or news relevant to trans-national drug crimes and external factors that Viet Nam and other nations are joining hands to investigate or expand investigations. 

The opening ceremony of the meeting is held on September 10 with the participation of more than 200 delegates, including 100 foreign ones from Viet Nam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, China, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOCD), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP). 

Deputy head of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, under the Ministry of Public Security Tran Van Doanh said that Viet Nam has uncovered a number of trans-national drug traffickers who consider the nation as the transit area, thus the leaders of the Ministry of Public Security reported to the Government on the initiative of organizing the meeting to comprehend the status and discuss measures to cope with the situations. 

Within five days, a series of bilateral meetings and plenary sessions such as the 18th Trilateral Ministerial Meeting among Laos, Viet Nam, Cambodia on drug prevention and control, bilateral meetings between Viet Nam and Laos and Viet Nam and Cambodia, the ASEAN Seaport Interdiction Task Force Meeting and meetings on the sidelines of the event will also be held. 

Deputy PM Truong Hoa Binh will attend the event and deliver a speech at the opening ceremony of the event on September 10. 

Delegates at the meeting will discuss to seek for urgent, strategic and long-term measures to effectively fight against drug crimes, particularly drug traffickers and organizations operating on road, sea and air routes.  

A joint declaration will be issued to affirm the commitments of nations and partners in sharing high-level awareness of enhancement of cooperation in struggling against crime within and beyond the region. 

The event creates an opportunity for Viet Nam to manifest its determinations and announce its achievements in drug prevention and control as well as its willingness and hope to join hands with other countries and international organizations in effectively realizing strong political commitments in resolutely fighting against drug, contributing to ensuring security and order for the stability and development of each nation in the region and the world.
