ASEAN’s global role in world’s drug prevention system enhanced

VGP – ASEAN needs to maintain its consensus in launching drug policies, make ASEAN’s cooperation in drug prevention and control become the region’s cooperative model and promote ASEAN’s global role in the world’s drug prevention and control system. 

The statement was made by Vietnamese Minister of Public Security To Lam on October 18 at the 6th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters in Ha Noi. 

The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Public Security’s Drug Crime Investigation Police Department and the National Committee for AIDS, Drugs, Prostitution Prevention and Control from October 17-19, attracting the participation of more than 100 delegates from nations in ASEAN. 

VN willing to contribute, enhance drug prevention works

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, Mr. To Lam asserted that the formation of the ASEAN Community is meaningful to Viet Nam, marking the 20th anniversary the nation has joined ASEAN and the international integration in struggling against drug. The cooperation in drug prevention and control is considered as one of strategic priorities of Viet Nam. 

The Vietnamese Government has given priority to drug prevention and control through synchronous measures on reduction of demand, supply and consequences of drug, completing the legal document system, completing drug prevention and control agencies, resolutely fighting against and treating with drug crimes, enhancing the bilateral relationship with ASEAN nations and its partners, especially neighboring nations as well as attaching importance to sub-region’s cooperation in drug prevention and control. 

The Vietnamese Minister confirmed that the nation is willing to make contributions and responsibly participate in the region’s prevention and control works, strengthen communications works to increase the awareness of people on drug hazards, strictly and fully implement agreements and commitments. 

Viet Nam expects to join hand with ASEAN to continue maintaining the key role of ASEAN at the regional forums and cooperative mechanisms, effectively cope with the global challenges on drug and protect the joint benefits of ASEAN from trends affecting the region’s drug control policies, he added.

Minister To Lam suggested ASEAN cooperative mechanisms on drug prevention and control identify prioritized matters in line with the development orientations and protection of the ASEAN Community within the ASEAN Vision 2025. 

He asked to strengthen information exchanges on drug between members and partners to propose effective policies, adding that country members should make contributions to the international community’s joint efforts in addressing drug issues.

The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters was set up in 2012 and institutionalized in 2015. The ASEAN Joint Statement was released during the 59 th session of the Commission of Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria on March 14, 2016 as well as at the Special Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on April 19, 2016.     

In 2016, ASEAN adopted a Work Plan on Securing Communities against Illicit Drugs for the 2016-2025 period during the fifth Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters that concluded in Singapore.
