Action month on prevention of mother-to-child transmission launched

VGP – The health sector has launched a number of activities promoting the action month on prevention of mother-to-child transmission (from June 1-30, 2019). 

During the month, the sector has supplied prevention services for mother-to-child transmission such as HIV testing for pregnant women, provided ARV for HIV-positive women including pregnant ones and promoted intervention and quality of prevention services of mother-to-child transmission. 

Mother without HIV-Children not transmitted with HIV

With the themed “Mother without HIV-Children not transmitted with HIV”, the event aims to reduce the proportion of mother-to-child transmission under 2% by 2020, which was proposed in the national strategy on HIV/AIDS prevention and control till 2020, with vision to 2030. 

The awareness of people at all levels, especially pregnant women and wives of HIV carriers and high-risk women on benefits of early HIV testing and treatment for prevention of mother-to-child transmission will be improved. 

The event also helps reduce discriminations against HIV-positive pregnant women and babies born from mother infected with HIV.  

A number of communications activities on social networks and websites will be carried out along with meetings and parades at cities and provinces nationwide.  

The proportion of mother-to-child transmission accounts for 25-40% among pregnant women. 

In Viet Nam, the proportion of HIV transmission among pregnant women makes up 0.4%. It is estimated that 6,000 new-born babies having HIV out of 1.5 million to 2 million babies every year.
