VGP – Drug prevention and control and border forces coordinated with functional agencies to detect 708 drug-related cases and arrest 1,180 suspects and 2,868.84 kg of drugs of all kinds over the recent months of the year.

The General Department of Viet Nam Customs said on September 14 that it had coordinated with competent forces to arrest 11 suspects and seize 237 kg of different narcotics.

Earlier on September 8, border officials arrested Nguyen Thi Hong Ha with 98 kg of synthetic drugs hidden in five wooden Buddhist statues at Cau Tre international border gate.

All statues had been equipped with tracking devices, police confirmed.

On the same day, border guards in Ha Tinh cooperated with Lao police to capture four other persons and seized 110 kg of methamphetamine hidden in six wooden Buddhist statues.

The Ho Chi Minh City Police said on September 9 that they busted a ring smuggling a combined 47 kilograms of drug from Cambodia to the Vietnamese southern hub.

Bui Thi Kieu Loan, 35, Nguyen Hoang Tu, 36, and Pham Dinh Nhan, 43, were carrying two boxes of fruit in Go Vap District on Wednesday morning when caught by local police.

Around 30 kg of meth, 10 kg of ketamine, 4.9 kg of heroin, and 20,000 ecstasy pills were found hidden inside the boxes.

On September 6, Quang Tri Province border guards caught eight Lao men red handed transporting 10 kg of methamphetamine into Viet Nam.

They seized 10 kg of meth, a K59 pistol with four bullets, two cars and two fake license plates.

Since the beginning of this year, Quang Tri border guards have busted 40 drug cases, arrested 78 people and seized more than 900,000 synthetic drug tablets, 41 kg of meth, 4.5 kg of ketamine and 804 kg of marijuana.

Drug busts and convictions have been increasing in Viet Nam though the country has very tough drug laws.

Viet Nam is one of the countries with strictest penalties against drugs trafficking. Those convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 gram of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine face the death penalty.

The production or sale of 100 gram of heroin or 300 gram of any other illegal narcotics is similarly punishable.
