Eight Vietnamese and Lao localities join hands in drug prevention, control

VGP – The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on drug prevention and control between eight Vietnamese and Lao localities was held on September 16 in the central province of Nghe An. 

Participants in the event included representatives of the Vietnamese and Lao Ministries of Public Security and four Lao provinces of Huaphanh, Phongsali, Xiengkhuang, Luang Prabang and four Vietnamese localities of Dien Bien, Son La, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. 

Effective coordination between eight localities 

After the meeting between eight provinces organized in 2018 in Thanh Hoa Province, the two nations’ local authorities have issued a number of documents aiming to enhance prevention of drug crimes, thus gradually restraining and reducing drug crimes. 

Provinces’ leaders have promoted information exchange and joined hands in addressing socio-economic and security and order issues, especially drug prevention and control works. 

These localities have actively launched contents referred in the memorandum of understanding inked at the 18thmeeting in 2018 such as organizing meetings and talks, exchanging information on drug crimes, promoting investment in equipment and vehicles for drug prevention and control works.  

The drug prevention and control forces in eight localities have handled with 4,244 drug-related cases and arrested 5,402 drug traffickers, an increase of 113 cases and 262 involved people against in 2018. As many as 2.26 tons of drug of all kinds including 266.8 kg of heroin, 1,395,703 meth pills and 118.64 kg of synthetic drug, 797.4 kg of meth, 125.8 kg of opium, 726 kg of cannabis and 84 kg of opium fruits were seized.

Currently, a total number of 45,585 drug addicts were recorded in these eight border provinces, including 6,823 in Nghe an, 7,472 in Thanh Hoa, 9,139 in Dien Bien, 9,176 in Son La, 4,724 in Huaphanh, 2,445 in Phongsali, 2,143  in Xiengkhuang, and 3,663 in Luang Prabang.

Signing contents to be concentrated 

At the meeting, delegates reviewed outcomes and shortcomings, difficulties and obstacles in drug prevention and control works, identifying drug crime trends in the upcoming time. 

Especially, a drug prevention and control program has been approved, which is manifested in the memorandum of understanding. 

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Nghe An Province’s People’s Committee Thai Thanh Quy highlighted that the organization of the meeting created an opportunity for localities and forces in charge of drug prevention to meet and exchange experiences, expecting that sectors at all levels will enhance coordination to effectively realize inked contents.
