Heading to drug-free ASEAN Community

VGP - The sixth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMD-6) called member countries to approve the Joint Statement to manifest the viewpoint of ASEAN on drug, consistently affirming the establishment of a drug-free ASEAN Community and opposing the legalization of drug use, excepting for medical and scientific purposes. 

The information was made by deputy head of the Ministry of Public Security’s Office Hoang Anh Tuyen, at a press briefing on the outcomes of the meeting on October 18.

The Joint Statement will be proposed at the 62nd session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (from March 14-15, 2019). 

ASEAN members approved an ASEAN Declaration opposing the legalization of controlled narcotic substances apart from medical and scientific purposes, and calling on the international community to abide by the Single Convention on Narcotics Drugs which is considered as the foundation of the world drug control system.

Mr. Tuyen highlighted the contributions of the Vietnamese delegation for its full and active participation in the contents of the agenda, contributing to the realistic and successful organization of the meeting. 

The nation has upheld its active role in promoting other nations to consider ratifying the ASEAN Joint Declaration on drug issues and the ASEAN Declaration opposing the legalization of controlled narcotic substances apart from medical and scientific purposes. 

Regarding the importance of issuing a Joint Declarations, he said that these documents will guide drug prevention and control activities and international integration in the upcoming time, manifest the voice, solidarity and consistency in ASEAN’s standpoints on drug issues. 

After two days with 14 agendas, the meeting has fulfilled its tasks, contents and agendas, showing the role of the highest cooperative mechanism in ASEAN on drug prevention and control and maintaining the crucial role in launching commitments in setting up the ASEAN of one vision, one destiny, one community.
