VGP – Deputy head of the Department of Science, Education, Culture and Social Affairs, under the Viet Nam Government Office Doan Huu Bay, member of the National Committee for AIDS, drug and prostitute prevention and control on October 7 held a working session with U.S. State Department Charlotte Sisson, Senior Foreign Affairs Officer on Drug Demand Reduction and the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

The working session included the participation of Director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Vu Huy Hoang.

At the meeting, Bay highly spoke and expressed thanks to the support of the INL for Viet Nam through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Colombo Plan in training staff on drug rehabilitation based on the international standard as well as contributions of the SAMHSA for AIDS and drug prevention in Viet Nam.

He expected that the INL and the SAMHSA will continue their support and coordination with Viet Nam in this work.

In the early months of 2019, the nation gained a number of achievements in drug prevention and control such as detecting large-scale drug trafficking cases and renovation in drug rehabilitation works.

Viet Nam’s functional agencies are considering supplementing and amending the Law on drug prevention and control to focus on the reduction of supply, demand and consequences of drug.

Bay hoped to strengthen the coordination between representatives of the INL and working group of the National Committee on AIDs, drug and prostitute prevention and control in training, legal and social assistance and drug court model.

For her side, Charlotte Sisson highlighted three key sectors of INL’s support for Viet Nam in the upcoming time including training for staff working in charge of rehabilitation, granting certificates for professionals on drug rehabilitation and supporting training courses for drug prevention and control.

Charlotte Sisson and Vu Huy Hoang believed that the cooperative relations with Viet Nam in drug and HIV/AIDS prevention and control will be closely enhanced in the time ahead.
