INL helps VN in reducing drug demands

VGP - Deputy head of the Department for Science, Education, Culture and Social Affairs, under the Vietnamese Government Office Doan Huu Bay on September 10 held a working session with Coordinator of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Jonathan Gandomi and Director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Vu Huy Hoang.

Welcoming Jonathan Gandomi’s first visit to the Government Office and the National Committee for AIDS, drugs and prostitution prevention and control, Bay expected that the two sides will strengthen cooperation in drug prevention. 

He spoke highly of and expressed thanks to the INL in training staff for drug rehabilitation in line with the international standards for Viet Nam through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Colombo Plan.

Bay also thanked contributions of the SAMHSA for AIDS and drug prevention works in Viet Nam. 

He informed drug prevention works in Viet Nam in early months of 2020 and complex happenings of drug trafficking situations amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

For his side, Jonathan Gandomi thanked Bay and the National Committee for close coordination with the INL, adding that the INL will organize two training courses for officials at the Supreme People's Court of Viet Nam on Drug Court model program. 

The INL will also support Viet Nam in establishing a comprehensive drug rehabilitation and prevention program as well as assisting the nation in conducting research on epidemiology and developing training materials program on detoxification, he added. 

Bay expected that the National Committee will further cooperate with the INL in reduction of drug demands and the INL will take over and continue launching works in the reduction of drug demands in Viet Nam as the SAMHSA in Viet Nam ends operation.
