VGP – More than 6,000 people in Viet Nam have joined PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), which has been launched in the nation since June 2017.

According to the statistics, after one year of PrEP program launch in Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control announced to expand PrEP from 11 localities which are under the management of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to 15 more localities which benefit the Global Fund.

PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV. Studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sexual activities by about 99% when taken daily. Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by at least 74% when taken daily.

In Viet Nam, high risk-groups of HIV transmissions include men who have sex with men (MSM), trans-gender women (TGW), Persons Who Inject Drugs (PWID), their partners and Female sex workers (FSW).

Almost PrEP users are young MSM (the average age of 28), accounting for 84% while the TGW and PWIM makes up 5% and 1%, respectively.

To help the community to quickly get access and maintain using PrEP, in 2020, the project will focus on upgrading PrEP access to target groups with the hope that PrEP services will be realized and led by the community to meet customers’ demand.
