Large drug trafficking cases uncovered in early May

VGP - Three drug cases were recently discovered in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong and the northern province of Nam Dinh, with 1.4kg of heroin and 4,000 synthetic drug pills seized.

Lam Dong police said on May 2 that they stopped a 33-year-old woman riding a motorcycle on late May 1 and found two boxes containing white powder. Test results show that the substance was heroin, and the two bricks weigh 350g each.

This woman, living in Lien Nghia township of Duc Trong district, confessed that she had brought the drug for VND540 million (over US$23,500) from another woman from the central province of Nghe An.

Also on late May 1, local police caught a 46-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man in Nam Ban township of Lam Ha district while they were trafficking two heroin bricks weighing 350g each on a motorbike.

The woman said they had been paid VND10 million to bring the drugs from Nghe An to Lam Dong’s Da Lat city.

Meanwhile, border guards of Nam Dinh province on May 1 also arrested a 31-year-old man for storing 4,000 synthetic drug pills in the Quat Lam tourist site in Quat Lam township of Giao Thuy district.

The man said he is a drug addict and had trafficked the drug from northern Son La province to Nam Dinh. He used to be imprisoned for 18 months for illegal drug storage and use and was just released in October 2019.

A man was caught for transporting a huge amount of synthetic drug pills and heroin into Viet Nam for consumption, said the Border Guard Command of the central province of Nghe An.

On May 2, Kha Van Choi, born in 1975 and residing in Ta Ca commune of the province’s Ky Son district, was caught red-handed by the border guard force at the Nam Can international border gate together with police of the district.

A total of 198 meth pills and five grams of heroin were seized.

These cases are being further investigated.

Those convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamines face the death penalty. The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.
