Meeting in response to National Action Month on Drug Prevention held

VGP – Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, Chairman of the National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Prevention and Control on June 23 attended a meeting in Vinh City, the central province of Nghe An, in response to the National Action Month on Drug Prevention and the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.  

Speaking at the event, the Deputy PM referred to the number of more than 230,000 drug users in Viet Nam under control and the real figure is higher. 

He asked for continuously enhancing drug prevention works, detecting drug trafficking cases and helping former drug addicts re-integrate into the community as well as promoting communications works to limit the number of new drug addicts.  

Drug use and drug addicts is the shortest way to social evils, crimes and diseases, he stressed, calling on youths to join hands with functional agencies to struggle against crimes, especially drug crimes.  

The same occasion, he acknowledged efforts of the police forces and foreign and domestic individuals and organizations in drug prevention and control.  

Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Quy Vuong said that in the first half of 2019, the volume of synthetic drug transported from Laos and Cambodia to Viet Nam tended to increase. 

As of April 30, 2019, the functional agencies uncovered  12,285 drug-related cases, arresting  19,454 drug traffickers, and seizing  675.05 kg of heroin, 507.5 kg of kentamin, 4,625 kg of synthetic drug, 317.76 kg of cannabis, 131.725 kg of cocaine and 156.4 kg of opium.

According to reports of localities nationwide, as of April 30, 2019, the total number of drug addicts under control was estimated at 230,767, an increase of 5,668 against 2018. 

The proportion of synthetic drug use accounted for 60-70% (70-80% in Central and Southern areas). 

2,334 communes and wards among 11,155 nationwide reported no drug evils, accounting for 20.9%. 

As many as 105 public drug rehabilitation centers are operating nationwide, treating for 54,462 drug addicts. A total number of six provinces and cities have organized drug rehabilitation at families and community for 4,320 ones. 

Methadone treatment has been launched at 63 cities and provinces at 318 laboratories, providing treatment services for 54,000 patients.
