VGP – The Methadone treatment program has helped save around VND22,870 billion for the society over the recent 10 years, said deputy head of the Viet Nam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control Hoang Dinh Canh.

Without Methadone treatment, each drug addict must spend VND230,000 per day for purchasing heroin or VND84 million per year. Thus, with more than 52,000 patients receiving Methadone treatment, as much as VND4,372 billion has been saved per year.

The treatment has been expanded to 63 localities nationwide, providing treatment for more than 52,000 patients.

The proportion of HIV transmissions among drug addicts has decreased around 30% in 2001-2002 period to 9.5% in 2016.

The number of new HIV carriers annually decreased from 30,000 ones from 2006-2007 period to 10,000 ones in 2015.

After 24 months of implementation, only 15.8% drug addicts still use heroin while the proportion of drug addicts violating laws dropped from 40.8% to 1.34%.

Besides reducing illegal drug use, law violations and burdens for drug addicts, families and society, the Methadone treatment program has made crucial contributions to the success of HIV/AIDS prevention and control program over the recent years, particularly the reduction of HIV infections through blood transmission and new HIV carriers.
