Minister of Public Security: Drug crimes up 30.2%

VGP – Drug crime cases over the recent months of 2020 witnessed an increase of 30.2% against the same period last year, reaching 30,332 cases while tons of drugs of all kinds were seized. 

Politburo Member and Minister of Public Security General To Lam made the statement while delivering a report on the prevention and control of crimes and law violations in 2020 at the working session of the National Assembly on October 26.

The Public Security Forces investigated 40,026 law violations related to social order, reaching 85.69% and busted 3,070 criminal gangs. 

As many as 46,710 law violations relevant to social order happened nationwide, down 2.76%, 22,105 of which are related to economic management, up 38.56% while violations subject to corruption decreased by 2.49%. 

A total number of 25,256 environmental violation cases were uncovered, up 12.07%. Functional agencies prosecuted 425 cases and arrested 432 suspects. 

According to Minister To Lam, they also attacked black credit networks, but this type of crime has now relied on the Internet, causing more difficulties for the police.

The Public Security Forces also accelerated the investigation of economic wrongdoings and corruption cases, while detecting and seriously handling persons taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to gain illegal economic benefits.

Notably, the police forces nationwide handled nearly 4 million traffic law violations, some 2,300 violations of regulations on fire prevention and fighting, and over 71,000 violations of regulations related to conditional business.

The deployment of regular policemen to communes have been completed, contributing to ensuring security and order at the grassroots levels.

Regarding drug crimes, the Government issued a plan on the implementation of the Directive No.36 of the Political Bureau on enhancing and improving the effectiveness of drug prevention and control and resolutely launched measures to fight against drug. 

Drug crimes are very complicated during the period of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At present, 235,012 drug addicts have management profiles.

Minister To Lam also briefed deputies on 9 key measures that the PSF will take to ensure security and order in 2021. Accordingly, the PSF shall focus on implementing all resolutions of the Party Central Committee and the National Assembly on ensuring security and order, crime prevention and control; step up the building of legal institutions, mechanisms and policies related to prevention and fight against crimes and law violations.

The PSF will also take effective measures to protect national security, defeat all conspiracies and sabotage activities by hostile and reactionary forces; ensure absolute safety for major national events, especially the 13th National Congress of the Party as well the elections of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels.
