Number of HIV carriers receiving ARV treatment increases by 55 times

VGP – The number of HIV carriers receiving ARV treatment in Viet Nam witnessed an increase of 55 times compared to 2004 when the nation started launching ARV treatment. 

More than 150,000 patients treated with ARV

Deputy head of the Viet Nam Administration for AIDS Control (VAAC) Hoang Dinh Canh said that more than 150,000 HIV carriers have been treated with ARV treatment, an increase of 55 times compared to 2004.

Meanwhile, the number of treatment facilities has risen from three in 2000 to 446 at present, he added. 

The proportion of patients using ARV medicine after one-year treatment has reached 85%. 

The number of children whose HIV was transmitted from their mothers has continuously decreased since 2012 while the proportion of HIV mother-to-child transmission over the last three years has maintained under 2%. 

The number of HIV/AIDS-related deaths reduced from 7,000-8,000 in 2009 to 1,000-2,000 at present. 

Up to 90% of patients receiving treatment from health insurance resource

At present, more than 55,000 patients have their ARV treatment covered by health insurance at 259 facilities nationwide. 

The proportion of patients enjoying ARV treatment from health insurance increased from 30% in 2015 to 90% at present. 

Nearly 300 treatment facilities have provided ARV treatment through health insurance, accounting for 69%. 

By 2023, around 82% of HIV carriers nationwide will get ARV treatment, Canh said. 

Currently, more than 40 localities have arranged local budget for purchasing 20,000 health insurance cards for HIV carriers. A total number of 28 cities and provinces have prepared local budget worth VND16 billion for ARV treatment.
