VGP – The launching ceremony of the Border Liaison Office (BLO) in Cha Lo, the central province of Quang Binh was jointly organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Drug-related Crime Investigation Police Department on January 13.

The event attracted the participation of more than 130 delegates from law enforcement agencies in the province and stationed along the Viet Nam-Laos border lines, including police, customs and border forces.

The newly-established BLO will operate at border areas crossing the Lao provinces of Khammouane and Savannakhet.

Deputy head of the Drug-related Crime Investigation Police Department Do Duc Binh said that drug crimes at localities bordering Laos is complicated, stressing the need to enhance international cooperation in drug prevention and control in general, particularly cooperation between neighboring countries in particular.

The BLO is a crucial information exchange channel, improving the effectiveness of trans-border drug prevention and control works, making contributions to promoting cooperation between the two nations’ drug prevention forces.

Quang Binh shares the border of more than 200 km with Laos. In 2020, the province’s police force uncovered 10 drug-related cases, seizing nearly 70,000 meth pills and 249 kg of drug.

Border management and international cooperation is one of the key matters in ASEAN agenda, UNODC Regional Law Enforcement Expert, Border Management (Southeast Asia and the Pacific) Valentina Pancieri said, adding that the BLOs have made crucial contributions to combating trans-national crimes.

The UNODC has sponsored the construction of 100 BLOs in Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and China.

In 2021, one more BLO will be established in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, raising the number of BLOs in Viet Nam to 22.
