VN’s 30-year tireless effort in HIV/AIDS fight

VGP – 2020 marked the 30th anniversary of Viet Nam’s fight against HIV/AIDS, whose achievements have won international praise.

Viet Nam has so far recorded 250,000 HIV carriers, and informed 210,000 of them about their status.

The country targets to end HIV/AIDS by 2030, so the Prime Minister has recently ratified the National Strategy on ending AIDS by 2030.

Head of the Viet Nam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control under the Ministry of Health Nguyen Hoang Long granted an interview on HIV/AIDS prevention and control works over the past 30 years and upcoming policies to soon eliminate the disease.

Long asserted that Viet Nam has continuously achieved three goals in terms of the reduction of the numbers of new HIV carriers, HIV carriers developing full-blown AIDS and deaths of AIDS over the decade.

Around half a million people have been helped not to get HIV and nearly 200,000 ones with AIDS have been supported to live well.

These achievements are mainly attributed to the successful implementation of the two National Strategies on HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

Regarding the necessity of issuing the National Strategy on ending AIDS by 2030, Long highlighted the importance of reducing the number of new HIV carriers under 1,000 per year from now to 2030.

The recently-approved Strategy has manifested big commitments of Viet Nam in HIV/AIDS prevention and control works to the international community, he added.

Referring challenges in implementing the Strategy, Long said that around 40,000 alive HIV carriers do not know their status, thus it is difficult to control the disease in the community.

The financial resource is also a shortcoming in this fight, he said, adding that the nation has received big financial support from the international organizations in the HIV/AIDS fight over the past 30 years.

In the next period, the resource will be strongly lessened so HIV/AIDS prevention and control works will be mainly depending on the State and local budgets.
